In liquid in the GI tract fine ground CMZ finds application in products used in animal feed. CMZ is an aluminosilicate where 1 in 4 silicon molecules are replaced by an aluminium molecule. This generates a single negative charge on each of the ring structures inside the highly porous inner structure of the Zeolite. Each charged atom binds to a positively charged ion. In the GI tract of animals this is an ammonium ion from Nitrogen in the feed from the breakdown of Nitrogen compunds, protein or urea. High levels of ammonia are toxic to animals. Bound Nitrogen can be reabsorbed further down the GI tract. This is referred to as improved Nitrogen efficacy.
